Create a website: Advice for the Online Businessman
To create a website can be quite a challenge, but it's worth the effort. If you're looking to put up a site for your business, it can help you get more customers through the door. There are some things, however, that you'll need to consider when you want to make your website. You'll have to remember a few things:
1.Establish the purpose of your site. Listing your objectives will let you (or your programmer) know what functions are best suited for your site. What do you intend your site to do for your business? Is it a simple FAQ about your company? Or will it be more complicated, where your customers can make orders, transact online, or give you customer feedback?
2. Avoid information overload. Many sites are guilty of information overload: too much content all at once, so that when the potential client logs on, he's immediately flooded with info. Remember that most Net users have a short attention span. A solid block of text, or long paragraphs that require the user to scroll down to read, will virtually guarantee that your information won't be read. The goal of your page is to give just enough information at a time to interest the potential client,so that the deeper the client goes into your site, the more he will want to know more and more about your business.
For that same reason, keep your layout clean when you create a website. Avoid long blocks of text, especially text that will require your user to scroll down. You want them to see only the most important information, and then if they want to know more, give them other pages they can look at for further information. If your client wants information about your services, make a separate section for that.
3.It's all about readability. To make your website easy to view, avoid using very bright colors as a background, or big fonts in several colors. Avoid large, brightly-colored letters (in net etiquette, large fonts and capitalizing all your letters is tantamount to screaming at people). Keep your site's color palette limited, and use colors that are easy to read text on. You want your user to keep on reading, so you want to make his experience as comfortable as possible.
4. Finally, update your site as much as you can. If you work in an industry that has trends, like say, real estate, or cars, then you want to have only the most recent information there to show that your business is up-to-date. So if you want to create a website that you intend to update often, you may want to look into content management systems. If your site only contains your company information and contact information, then a simpler, static website will do the job.
An effective website for your business can be a good investment for both your time and money. But to create a website that's effective, you just have to remember: it's all about presentation. Your average user will have a short attention span, so make sure that you present your information in an orderly, concise manner. Keep it visually interesting, but don't go overboard. If your website looks good, users will be more likely to stick around and find out more about your company.
